Banpeiyu, a specialty of Yatsushiro in Kumamoto, is an exceptionally large pomelo (C. maxima) known for its origins in Malaysia and its popularity in Taiwan as "Pai yau."

Though its essential oil yield is modest just 0.6%, what it offers in return is a fragrance of exceptional complexity and elegance. Unlike the sharp, linear brightness of common citrus oils, Banpeiyu unveils a layered, resinous depth. Dominated by 35–40% myrcene, its profile carries an enduring note of anise, seamlessly balanced by softened citrus undertones. This creates a scent that is both grounded and luminous, echoing the quiet charm of Japan’s southern citrus regions.

Further distinguishing this oil is its elevated β-cubebene content an uncommon aromatic marker that introduces a cool, peppered lift, reminiscent of Java pepper (Piper cubeba). In contrast to its close relatives, Hirado and Mato Buntan, Banpeiyu contains minimal γ-terpinene and terpinolene, making it void of overt lemony tones. The result is a refined, structured composition, earthy, elegant, and deeply atmospheric.
