ESSENTIAL OIL

Mellarosa essential oil, derived from the citrus melarosa Risso fruit, captivates with its elusive origins and intriguing scent.

The name Mellarosa likely originates from the words for honey (mel) and rose (rosa), hinting at the delicate fragrance reminiscent of roses that emanates from this essential oil. However, it is important to note that the scent of Mellarosa essential oil may not actually resemble that of roses, contrary to popular belief.

Renowned naturalist Cuvier, who classified it as a type of lime, described the tree's bark as having a pleasing aroma akin to roses. Even the leaves, when crumpled, released a sweet and pleasant fragrance. However, it is doubtful that the bark, leaves, or the fruit itself truly possessed a distinct rose scent.

Risso, in his observations on Mellarosa essential oil (also known as Risso mellarose bergamot), admits uncertainty regarding its name, as its fragrance and flavor predominantly resemble bergamot, with subtle undertones of lime. Curiously, despite its classification as a bergamot, Mellarosa essential oil lacks the characteristic scent associated with that variety.

Risso further explains that earlier classifications deemed it as belonging to bitter oranges, lemons, and even limes, but it defies easy categorization within these familiar citrus families.

Thus, Mellarosa essential oil remains an enigmatic and exceptional member of the citrus realm, alluring with its mysterious origins and aromatic profile.

In essence, Mellarosa essential oil captivates with its elusive nature, evoking scents that intertwine elements of roses, honey, bergamot, and subtle hints of lime. Its classification and the complexities surrounding its fragrance make it a unique and fascinating addition to the world of essential oils.
