Citrus Essential Oils
Mato Buntan
(Citrus maxima)
ESSENTIAL OIL
Anyone who has ever passed by a Mato Buntan tree in flower will never forget the power of its fragrance.
We should say まとう Madou, instead of Mato, like the town of Madou 麻豆 in Taiwan which is the center of cultivation for this Chinese fruit. Mato Buntan (buntan = pomelo = C. maxima) in Japan is the usual term in French and English.
We extract 2 essential oils ; from the blossoms (with microscopic yields but incredible pleasure ) and from the zest of the fruit in which limonene is the main component (95 to 96%), followed by myrcene 1.9%, α-pinene 0.5%. The aroma of our Mato Buntan essential oil is sweet and sour and richly fruity with a surprising camphorous note.
FRUIT
Ripe in September-October. It is comestible but it is difficult to grow fruit that is good to eat.
They say it should eaten while looking at the moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival – Round pomelo - round moon.
